Can I get a rebate for Exercise Physiology?
An Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Plan or Referral is an initiative run through Medicare that entitles people suffering from a chronic condition to receive a rebate for allied health services. A chronic condition is defined as a condition you have suffered from for six months or longer. Examples of conditions include: diabetes, heart and lung conditions, cancer, chronic pain, joint problems (arthritis) and Parkinson’s disease. The EPC referral entitles you to five sessions a year rebated by Medicare and ten sessions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The EPC referral scheme also allows people with diabetes to attend eight group exercise sessions on top of the original five sessions. Yes an EPC plan can be used for exercise physiology! How do you get an EPC referral? Simply visit your GP and ask them about an EPC referral to an Exercise Physiologist.
If you have used your five sessions or are not entitled to an EPC referral do not fret! Most private health insurance funds cover a percentage of exercise physiology services. Depending on your level of cover will depend on your rebate. Your rebate will be completed on the spot or if you use the app HICAPSGo you can see the gap and only the gap is removed from your bank account. Think like Uber you see the fare before the service and know what you’re entitled to.
Exercise Physiologist’s are also covered under Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) and National Disability Insurance Scheme. To be covered by DVA you must visit your GP and obtain a management plan and referral for exercise physiology services. For NDIS you simply use your funding under “improved health and wellbeing”, to contribute towards exercise physiology services. At Hunter Rehab we also see people over the age of 65 living at home who use government funding through My Aged Care to assist with maintaining functional independence to continue living at home.
