An acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to any form of brain damage which occurs after birth as a result of illness or injury. Common causes of ABI’s include trauma to the head via direct contact, alcohol and drug abuse, oxygen deprivation, motor vehicle accidents, stroke, Parkinson’s’ disease or other illness. The total amount of brain damage varies depending on the cause and the consequences can be difficult for everyone involved.
Individuals who have acquired a brain injury can become incontinent, experience slurred speech, delayed speech, difficulty walking or paralysis of limbs. Other symptoms can include depression, dizziness, fatigue, frequent headaches, weakness, spasticity, shakiness and poor balance.
Exercise is an important component of rehabilitation for individuals who have an acquired brain injury. Through exercise prescription we can improve range of motion, gross and fine motor skills, balance and coordination, gait patterns and strength.
